Today is Father’s Day. Just in case you were wondering why everyone on FB and Instagram is posting a pic of their Dad, that’s why. So for those of us with “Daddy issues”, today is for you. It seems a rarity in today’s culture that children grow up with capable, and loving fathers. Never before in history has there been so many single moms. Many of those never marrying their child’s father. I’m not passing judgement. It is what it is. The traditional American family seems to be a thing of the past. A figment of our imaginations. What we have now, are many women with “Daddy Issues”. Many of God’s daughters grow up feeling abandoned, abused, unloved, and are constantly seeking approval and love from men. The love and approval they never felt from their Dad. They never felt love or heard nice words from the one person they needed to hear it from the most. Where does that innate insecurity and drive come from? One of my favorite pastors Mark Driscoll says:
“For Good or For Ill, in his presence or in his absence, DAD is the most powerful spiritual influence in the home.”
If you were raised in a traditional family with a loving, God fearing Dad, I want you to know how extremely rare this is and how lucky you are. Tell your Dad you love him and NEVER take him for granted.
If you did not grow up regularly hearing you were beautiful and loved, I want you to know I’m sorry. Your earthly father may have been a complete let down. The word Father may strike fear in you this very moment. You may still carry wounds from the past, curses spoken over your life, and feel like the little girl desperately searching for her father’s love and approval. My friend, please take heart today. YOU HAVE A HEAVENLY FATHER THAT LOVES YOU! You are his child. His warrior princess. Don’t you dare, not even for one second, let ANY words, actions, or lack of, keep you from the plans your heavenly father has for you. A relationship with him is THE ONLY THING THAT MATTERS. Once you know that. You’re free. Climb up in his lap. Take his hand and rest in him. Go on an adventure with him today.
He is NOT going to call you names or condemn you. He is not going to hurt you or let you down. He loves you so much that he actually died for you. When you truly know that in your gut, it changes who you are and how you see yourself.
“For he chose us in him before the creation of the world to be holy and blameless in his sight. In love he predestined us for adoption to sonship through Jesus Christ in accordance with his pleasure and will–to the praise of his glorious grace, which he has freely given us in the ONE he loves. “
Ephesians 1:4
Climbing in his lap,
